What is a VSME report, in plain terms?

VSME is the voluntary European sustainability reporting standard for small and medium companies, a lighter version of the rules large companies follow. It gives banks and customers the environmental and social data they ask for, in a format they recognise.

Do I have to comply with the CSRD?

Probably not directly. The CSRD applies to large companies. But if you supply one of them, they will ask you for data on your emissions, your people and how you run your business. A VSME report answers those questions in one go.

What do you need from me, and how much of my time?

The basics: energy and waste figures, staff and safety records, a few documents you already keep. I do the gathering and writing. For the stories, your people use their own phones in their own time. For you: a kickoff, a few check-ins and a review at the end.

How long does it take?

Six to ten weeks from first look to handover, depending on your data and how many stories you want. Have a hard deadline from a customer? Tell me at the intake and we plan back from it.

What happens to my people's photos and stories?

Nothing is published without their approval, and no faces of others. They choose their own moment and words, and they can share the story themselves. In the photo test, photos and answers go once to Claude, the AI model by Anthropic, to write the story. I store nothing, and Anthropic does not train on it. Their story stays theirs.

Do you use AI? Doesn’t that use a lot of energy?

Yes, as a tool. In the photo test, AI turns your photos and answers into a story card. The words come from your people themselves; AI only gives them shape. That way everyone can tell their own story, even when I’m not there. That is what matters to me: giving people their own voice. One story is one short request to the model. That is far less than travelling to a workplace for every conversation. Whatever goes into your report, I always read and check myself.

What does it cost?

It depends on your organisation and what you need. After a free 15-minute call you get a clear quote, no surprises. Foundations and charities pay nothing or a reduced rate, because I want to give something back.

About · Digna Akkermans

I don't just advise on sustainability.
I live it.

I'm a cultural anthropologist and I'd rather be outside. You don't learn sustainability from a spreadsheet. I go there, see it with my own eyes and talk to the people who do the work. That's what I bring to your report:

Why I do this

Digna
Aletsch glacier, my first ultra
Digna
Trail running among the foxgloves

I'm an ultrarunner.

I run hundreds of kilometres through the mountains. I didn't do that overnight: it's small steps, every day. That's how I look at sustainability too. The Aletsch glacier, where I ran my first ultra, gets smaller every year. That's why I do this work.

An anthropologist in the field.

Where are the people doing the real work? As an anthropologist I lived among small-scale farmers in Latin America and learned that what really happens is rarely on paper. That's why I talk to people first, and only then look at the numbers.

Collaborations

I bring in people I trust.

Value Chain Voices is not a one person job. You can hire me on my own, but the real strength is the circle of people I bring in: researchers, storytellers and resilience experts who each add something my own work does not. Two of those partnerships have grown into something with a name and a purpose of its own.

The Green Thread

Sustainability, made practical.

With Albert Gast I run the reporting and storytelling as one named programme. Albert brings the research and analysis, I bring the report, the strategy and the stories. Together we pull a single thread through every department, so each one sees what sustainability really means for its own work.

The proof comes from the floor, not from claims on paper. Credible to a critical client, and never greenwashing.

Best for

Companies that want sustainability to become part of daily practice across the whole organisation, and to prove it with real stories.

1

VSME that convinces

Figures backed by proof from the floor, enough for an accountant and a financier.

2

Stories from the floor

The numbers come alive through the real voices of the people doing the work.

3

Credible, no greenwashing

Critical clients and chain partners are convinced by proof, not by claims on paper.

The Resilience Check

Strong on the inside, proven on the outside.

Your reports show you are compliant. They don't show whether your organisation can take a hit and keep running. A lost customer, a new rule, a machine down, a key person who leaves.

The Resilience Check does. With Thom Koning of Mizzen Global, your managers score how the organisation really works across 13 points, in three areas: leadership and culture, change readiness, and networks and relationships. You get one honest picture of where you are strong and where you are exposed, per site and across the company.

The weak spots become your first actions. They strengthen the social and governance part of your VSME report, and leave your team steadier for what comes next.

Best for

Companies, often in maritime, offshore and heavy industry, that want to come out of the process organisationally stronger, not just compliant on paper.

The platform behind the reporting.

Pieter Boersema and Martijn Hooijmeijer built this reporting platform on the EFRAG VSME standard. I worked with them as a consultant, bringing the practitioner's view so it fits how a double materiality analysis under CSRD and a VSME report are actually put together, and I use their platform for my own client reports.

You enter your data step by step on the platform, against direct EFRAG references. It becomes an interactive report with real-time summaries and visualisations, and exports as an XBRL-tagged file, the machine-readable format banks and auditors expect, alongside PDF and Word.

Best for

Companies that need a double materiality analysis for CSRD or a VSME report, kept structured and audit-ready in one tool.
